You don't have to spend a fortune to secure your home.
Every day we attend the aftermath of a burglary scene which could be anywhere in South Yorkshire. We are familiar with the working environment after our previous experience as burglary detectives with South Yorkshire Police.
Such incidents can stay with people for the rest of their lives and affect the most hardened people. Our goal has always been to help people not become victims of crime by preventing burglary.
You can think of home security like layers of an onion. Each layer is essential but has different characteristics between physical security and deterrent.
Physical security can be defined as measures that stop property access if tried. Deterrents can be defined as measures which would put a burglar off trying to access the property.
Physical security products like accredited door locks are the most crucial home security measures. With over 70% of burglaries entering through the door, it is essential that your door is secure and seen to be secure.
A burglar will look for distinctive non-accredited door locks as they carry no quality markings on the face of the lock. However, accredited door locks carry very distinctive British Standard markings or Star and Diamond markings, which show they have been tested to withstand attack.
A knowledgeable thief will not attempt to break an accredited lock as they know the attempt will be futile. A non-accredited lock is, however, a sign the thief can be in and out of the home in seconds.
Therefore, the first physical security measure should be to install accredited door locks on all external doors. There are many brands of anti-snap locks to choose from, with the best showing three stars and a diamond. The diamond denotes the lock has been tested to Master Locksmith association standards and has the sold secure accreditation for being able to withstand a lock-snapping attempt.
