Compared to traditional blocks or bricks, using railways sleepers for a raised bed or even a retaining wall, will be less expensive and will also look amazing.

Historically railway sleepers were used to support railway lines, they would have a worn appearance which makes them ideal for that traditional rustic look.

These reclaimed railway sleepers are still available, but due to popular demand, garden railway sleepers are now made specifically from FSC sourced timber which is pressure treated for longer life. While being pressure treated they can have a slight colour like brown or green added. Being pressure treated means they do not need anything added to them to protect form rot, however people often do like to have them stained to a different colour such as dark oak.

Oak railway sleepers are also available, which are more expensive, and again these do not need to be treated.
