Water softeners utilize specially formulated resin beads to capture calcium and magnesium via a process called ion exchange. Tap water flows over the beads in the softener's treatment chamber, and the minerals become trapped by their negative charge. The beads periodically undergo a cleaning phase using a salty solution that allows them to continue drawing unwanted minerals out of the water stream indefinitely.
