Xeomin vs Botox: Which One is Right for You?

POSTED ON SEPTEMBER 9, 202309

In the world of cosmetic medicine, Botox is one of the most commonly used injectable treatments to reduce wrinkles. However, Botox is not the only brand available on the market. There are also other injectable treatments like Xeomin, manufactured by Merz Pharma. Let’s take a look at the differences between Xeomin and Botox to help you decide which treatment is right for you to smooth out wrinkles and give you a more youthful and pleasant appearance.

1. What are Xeomin and Botox?

Xeomin and Botox are two types of injectable neurotoxins (forms of botulinum toxin type A) that have been approved by the FDA as cosmetic treatments to address facial lines and wrinkles. This neurotoxin blocks neuromuscular signals and relaxes the target muscles at the injection site. Although these treatments contain the same active ingredients, there are some differences in how they are administered and formulated.

2. What are The Similarities Between Xeomin and Botox?

Xeomin and Botox do share some similarities. Both treatments are effective in eliminating expression lines and wrinkles that occur due to repetitious muscle contractions involved in everyday facial movements. Xeomin and Botox also last around the same amount of time, typically 3 to 4 months and only take a few minutes to inject. The full effects of botulinum toxin take about two weeks.

3. What are The Differences Between Xeomin and Botox?

Xeomin contains a “naked” form of botulinum toxin, designed to deliver the toxin without any protein additives. This purified structure reduces the likelihood of allergic reactions or sensitivities in some individuals. Unlike Botox, which contains other proteins that can cause allergies.

4. What are The Side Effects of Xeomin and Botox?

Though Xeomin may lead to fewer allergic reactions than Botox, post-treatment side effects can still happen for both. Both injectables can cause temporary bruising, redness and swelling at the injection site. Risk of developing these side effects can be reduced if you do not take anti-inflammatory medication before your appointment.

5. What is The Aftercare Following Xeomin or Botox?

In general, you can resume your normal activities when using these injections for cosmetic purposes. However, it is important to carefully follow the post-treatment care instructions to reduce the risk of side effects:

  • Do not massage or rub the treatment area for 6 to 8 hours after treatment.
  • Do not lie down for 6 hours after the procedure.
  • Avoid leaning forward, showering, or cooking over a high heat for 6 hours following your treatment.
  • Keep your head in an upright position for at least 6 hours after treatment.
  • Do not wear makeup for at least 12 hours after treatment.
  • For the first 24 hours after treatment, avoid exercise/yoga, saunas, facials, sunlight, heat and alcohol.
  • Avoid driving until you know how your treatment affects you.
  • Headache is a common side effect of botulinum toxin products. Avoid taking aspirin or medications containing aspirin. Instead, use Tylenol and apply a cool compress.
  • If you have swelling or discomfort, you can use Tylenol and/or apply a cool compress to the area.

Please consult with our medical injectors if you have any questions or concerns about your post-treatment care.

6. Xeomin vs. Botox: Which is More Effective?

Xeomin is an effective treatment for cosmetic purposes, while Botox is also effective. Both treatments are relatively easy to administer, as opposed to plastic surgery or other invasive procedures, and both begin to work once they are injected into the muscles, their full effect may not be seen until 7 to 14 days after injection or longer.

7. Xeomin vs. Botox: Which Results Last Longer?

In research studies, Xeomin was found to be faster and last longer than Botox. The study evaluating 180 people over a six-month period found that more women experienced greater effects than men. The Journal of Dermatologic Surgery also has published the results of a double-blind clinical trial comparing the active ingredients of Xeomin and Botox. The trial included 250 women who received either 20 units of Xeomin or 20 units of Botox. According to this study, two injections of the toxin showed similar effects after four months.
