What May Be Lurking Below Might Surprise You
A newly built home feels great when you first move into it. Everything is fresh and clean, ready to make into your personal living space. Or is it? One thing we often see from newly built homes is a need for duct cleaning. Why should that be a problem?
Construction is Messy
Construction is always a messy business. It creates a lot of dirt and debris. Sawdust, plaster, concrete chips, and more, all these are commonplace at a construction site. You can’t prevent it, but fortunately a good construction company will clean it up after they’re done. Even so, construction crews are people and people make mistakes. When it comes to construction clean-up, it’s easy to overlook the air ducts in a finished building because they’re out of sight.
That Mess Can End Up In Your Air Ducts
When the dust settles, it settles on everything. There’s dozens of feet of space in your air ducts that are completely out of sight and anything in them is going to get missed from a casual inspection. Even in newly built homes, we’ve found all sorts of construction debris left behind. Screws, powdered drywall, even tools and slabs of concrete can find their way into the air ducts. Unless they’re right there at the start of the duct, the construction crew probably won’t see them when they clean up.
Why Does This Matter?
You may be wondering why you should care about things in your air ducts. After all, modern air ducts are fitted with filters to keep that stuff out, right? This is true and once the air duct is cleaned, those filters will keep them clean for a long time. That said, what’s in them at the start can be a problem. The dust may clog up your filter, forcing you to replace it faster than you might have needed to otherwise.
On top of that, it may interfere with your HVAC’s efficiency. According to the US Department of Energy nearly 40% of our energy use goes into keeping our house warm in the winter and cool in the summer. If there’s dust in your air ducts, it may cost you even more than that! When dust builds up in machines, it creates additional friction and that creates more wear and tear. This means that you might need to replace parts on your HVAC sooner and it will also make those parts work less efficiently. You’ll spend more energy just to keep your house at a comfortable temperature.
Keep Your Ducts Clean
Whether it’s a newly built home, or remodeling an old one, construction is messy. While construction crews will do their best to clean up after, there’s still a good chance that some of that mess will end up in your ducts. That’s why it’s a good idea to have your air ducts cleaned when you first move in, or any time you do any remodeling. The dust and construction debris that might be left behind will be a problem for your HVAC system, costing you more money over time than you would normally need to spend. Getting your air ducts cleaned will help reduce this problem, as well as keep the air in your home cleaner for longer.
