Make that Carpet Cleaning Job Last!
With spring cleaning coming up, it’s time to get our homes looking their best. That’s going to include carpet cleaning. Just vacuuming isn’t enough; as you walk on your carpets, you cause the dirt to harden and stick in the fibers. Only specialized cleaning chemicals can break this down letting you get your carpet fully cleaned.
But once you get it cleaned up, what then? How do you get the most out of your carpet cleaning job? Here’s 5 tips.
1. Clean Out Your Air Ducts
Carpets are great for gathering dust out of the air, but that’s no reason to put more dust into it than normal. If you want to make sure you get rid of all the dust, having your air ducts cleaned out is a good first move. If you haven’t cleaned your air ducts in a while, there’s probably a lot of dust built up inside.
As your ducts move air, they also move this dust and will blow it out into your carpet. Cleaning your air ducts before getting your carpets cleaned will make sure that there isn’t any dust blowing in.
2. Plan for All Carpets
Sometimes, you think it’ll save you some money to just clean the carpets that look dirty, or maybe just the rooms that get the most use. While this may save a little money at the moment, it’s not a very good way to make sure your carpets stay clean. The dust and grime from the carpets you don’t clean will get on your feet and you’ll just walk it onto the clean carpets. If you want to make sure your carpets stay as clean as possible for as long as possible, plan to have all your carpets cleaned at once.
This may also save you more money in the long run because part of the cost of cleaning carpets is the charge for going out to your home. Having it done separately means getting hit with that charge twice.
3. Have A Schedule for Vacuuming
While vacuuming alone isn’t enough to keep your carpets clean, regular vacuuming is definitely one of the most helpful things you can do. Keeping to a regular weekly schedule will pick up a lot of loose dirt in the carpets. This will reduce the amount that gets stamped down and hardens into the fibers. It won’t stop all of it, but it will really slow the build-up.
Another tip along this line is to always clean up spills as soon as they happen. Different types of spills will need different chemicals to clean them. Get the appropriate spot cleaning solutions so you have them on hand for the kinds of things you might spill so you have them ready. When a spill happens, get on it right away.
4. Remove Your Shoes
A lot of dirt and grime gets stuck in the bottoms of your shoes as you walk around outside. As you walk around on your carpet, the carpet fibers will loosen that and knock it out. Then that dirt is in the carpets. One way to avoid getting the grime and dirt on your carpet is to always wear shoes outside, but always take them off when you come in (or have indoor shoes).
That way, your feet never have gunk on them and the gunk that gets on your shoes never gets in the carpets. You can improve this further by putting down mats to wipe your feet on. Good floor mats with strong, bristly fibers are designed to scrape the grooves in your shoes to loosen dirt and rocks. That way, they bring in even less gunk to worry about.
5. Have a Regular Schedule for Carpet Cleaning
In addition to having a regular schedule for vacuuming, a regular schedule for professional carpet cleaning is a smart idea. When the dirt in your carpet hardens under compression, it forms sharp crystals that cut the carpet fibers. This can dramatically shorten the lifespan of the carpet, which is why regular professional carpet cleaning is important.
How often you should clean your carpets varies. If you have a lot of foot traffic, such as lots of kids and pets coming and going all the time, you might need to clean more often – perhaps once per season. If you live alone and don’t frequently go out, and are careful about taking off your shoes and cleaning spills, perhaps just once per year in the spring will do.
Our personal recommendation is twice a year. First, get it done in the fall so that everything you’ve walked into the carpet over the year is gone for the season where you spend the most time indoors. Second, do it in the spring so you remove all the chemicals and salts they put on the roads, which are also really bad for your carpets.
We Do Carpet Cleaning Now
Easy Breezy cut its teeth on duct and vent cleaning, but our aim is to make sure that everyone can breathe easy in their own home. While duct cleaning can help remove dust, modern filters and HVAC systems are designed to reduce this problem and you really only need it once every 2-3 years. But carpets are the second biggest filter for your house. They trap dust from the air, making the air cleaner. Like all filters, there’s a limit to how much dust they can hold. Once too much dust gets into the carpet, walking on it will just kick more dust into the air.
That’s why we now do carpet cleaning! Whether it’s ducts, vents, or your carpets, we’re all about removing the gunk and grime that makes it hard to breathe easy. If you need your carpets, air ducts, or dryer vents cleaned, give us a call today!
