The methods that are used in identity theft

In identity theft, hackers and scammers use various methods to steal important details that define your identity and then use those details to commit fraud. This is extremely serious because this appears to a defrauded person as if you’re the person committing the fraud, while the hackers themselves decamp with the amounts defrauded. 

This can place you in an extremely difficult position, where you’re liable for the defrauded amount until you can prove otherwise. While there are lots of sources of information that can lead to identity theft and data breaches, much of it is centred around a social security number, since this is used to identify people across a wide range of services. The primary use of identity theft is in defrauders applying for a loan or a credit card in your name. They will then use that credit card to draw out vast sums of money which you are left liable for. 

Just as serious is when identity theft is used to avoid criminal proceedings. Here, a criminal, when arrested by a police officer, will, instead of providing his own details, provide the details that he has stolen from you. 

Even more complex is when a criminal tries to defraud the tax department by filing a return in your name. Although it’s in your name, it’s they who’ll receive the refunds.
