The Liwa Desert is in Al Gharbia (Western) region south of Abu Dhabi Emirate (approx. 220 km). Bordering Saudi Arabia in the south, Qatar in the west and Oman in the east. This unique desert features breathtaking landscape of towering sand dunes up to 250 meters high intercepted by magnificent flush green farms and oasis. Al Gharbia is rich in history, culture and natural resources (90% of total Oil & Gas production). The first settlers arrived in Liwa from different parts of the Arabian Peninsula some 300 years ago. Today the Al Nahyan ruling family originates from the main Bani Yas tribe who migrated further north and settled in the Island of Abu Dhabi. The Liwa Desert lies on the edge of the Empty Quarter "Rub Alkhali" Desert, the largest continuous sand desert in the world (approx. 650,000 sq km). It stretches some 120 km from east to west and some 60 km north to south. No wonder it was chosen to film the Hollywood blockbuster movies " The force awakens " & " Dune "
